Helpful FAQs for Foreign Whippet Exhibitors

DO I NEED TO REGISTER MY DOG WITH THE CANADIAN KENNEL CLUB?

All foreign-born and owned dogs no longer require a CKC individual registration number to enter shows in Canada.  However, they do require a TCN (Temporary Competition Number) or an ERN (Event Registration Number) to enter.  We recommend getting an ERN.

TCN: Temporary Competition Number

 ERN: Event Registration Number

  • An ERN will allow you to enter shows indefinitely without paying additional fees per show.

  • In addition, with an ERN your dog will be eligible to move up to specials when finished.

  • The fee for an ERN is $64.

  • Do not wait until the last minute to apply for an ERN– it can take some time to get a number. Please apply as soon as you can!

  • Apply for an ERN:

WHERE CAN I FIND PREMIUM LISTS AND SHOW CALENDAR INFORMATION?

Go to canuckdogs.com for a comprehensive listing of dog events in Canada.  Choose the Region you are interested in and then the kind of event.  There will be listings of the events with contact information for the individual show secretaries and links to premium lists.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP?

  • Earn at least 10 points under at least 3 different judges

  • Earn at least one 2-point win, either at breed or group level

  • Be individually CKC registered or have an Event Registration Number (ERN)

A maximum of 5 points can be won at the Breed or Group level per show.   In Canada, the number of males and females is added together to determine the number of points awarded (for Best of Winners and Best of Breed winners). In addition, points can be earned for group placements depending upon the number of breeds competing in the group.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN AKC/CKC SHOWS?

In addition to the championship requirements and calculation of points (above), there are several other differences.

  • In Canada, the order of placements is Best of Breed, then Best Opposite Sex, then Best of Winners.

  • Most specialty shows (and some all-breed shows) offer an Altered Competition, for spayed/neutered dogs to earn an Altered Championship.

    • This is judged immediately following Best of Breed, with the awards being Best of Breed Altered, Best Opposite Sex Altered, Winners/Reserve Altered Male and Female.

    • There are only two classes – Altered Male/Female Open class with no Specials Only classes.

    • Points towards a separate Altered Championship are awarded to the dogs going Winners with generally additional points to the BOB winner (no BOW award).

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO TAKE MY DOGS ACROSS THE US/CANADA BORDER?

If driving, you will need a valid rabies certificate for each dog.  Health certificates are not required if driving across the border.   Although not required, we would strongly suggest you have copies of registration papers or other proof of ownership

If flying, you will need valid rabies certificate and an international health certificate for each dog.  We also strongly suggest copies of registration papers or other proof of ownership. Be sure to contact your chosen airline to confirm any other flight-specific requirements.

WHAT OTHER BORDER CROSSING INFORMATION SHOULD I KNOW?

  • Make sure every traveler has an up-to-date Passport.

  • Canada has very strict gun laws, so leave them at home!   You can be arrested at the border if you are carrying firearms or other weapons.  Even if you have a license to carry a firearm in the US, it is NOT valid in Canada. Same with Mace, Bear Spray and any drugs - they are not allowed to be brought into Canada.

  • Even though marijuana is legal in many states and provinces it is NOT federally legal and therefore a criminal offense to bring it into Canada – this includes any CBD oils, edibles, etc.

  • A limited amount of alcohol is permitted – be sure to check with the Canada Border Services website to see a list of items you can bring into Canada.

  • For the ease of border crossing, our best advice is to answer any border agent’s questions as honestly as possible.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD I KNOW?

Don’t forget that Canada uses the Metric System – so road speed limits are in kilometers per hour, not MPH!

IMPORTANT UPDATE | MAY 2024

Our show dates are the weekend BEFORE  the new CDC/US border regulations for crossing with dogs into the USA come into effect!  For any of our American friends planning on staying in BC after the show, just make sure you are across the border back into the USA BEFORE August 1st.  Up until that time, you only need your valid rabies certificates to cross.
